Berserk juror Chris Vitello talks briefly about the show.

First Friday Reception: April 4, 6-9pm

The Exhibit:
This exhibition gives artists a chance to work outside your norm. Everyone has a comfort zone. This show features work in the  discomfort zone. We asked artists to explore the ideas that are darker/stranger, outside of their usual scale or medium, or outside what is currently happening in contemporary art. We want the departures, the mistakes, the set-asides, the where-the-hell-did-that-come-froms. Art that doesn’t usually have a place in programmed exhibitions will find its home in this show.

The Juror:
Chris Vitello Chief Contributor, Indy Weekly

From the Juror:
“I get excited when I see something I’ve never seen before. When an artist pushes himself or herself into a new area, it leaves that kind of mark on their work. There’s a Thelonious Monk tune called ‘Ugly Beauty’–it’s something like that. I’m looking for that alien mark. I’m interested in seeing a hand that makes something it doesn’t already know how to make. Because that means the work was made by a mind and a need. That’s compelling. Otherwise you’re just cranking out widgets, right?” – Chris Vitello
